Another week, another magazine appearance…
This time, I'm featured in Capture magazine, Australia's top-selling professional photography magazine. Unfortunately, the magazine didn't offer to fly me out to Australia and decided to conduct their interview by email instead of in person, but one of my images leads a piece that includes internationally famous wedding photographers such as Marcus Bell and Ryan Schembri.
The article is about the business side of wedding photography, specifically selling high resolution digital files to clients. Much of the article concentrates on the money side of this issue, but my contribution is related to one of the many concerns that professional wedding photographers have about selling digital files to their clients: how can we guarantee that they won't make a bad job of printing them and therefore presenting our work badly?
It's a question that I've thought long and hard about. My attitude is that most of my clients want to purchase digital files of their wedding photography so I need to make them available, but that I also need to do whatever I can to make sure that my clients will get good results from them. The last thing I want is for a poor print knocked out on a cheap inkjet printer or a badly-resized image on Facebook to be presented under my name - I want prospective clients to see my work and think "wow!" rather than "urgh!". Digital files are in demand from wedding photography clients, so I think it's time to stop worrying about whether or not it's a good idea to sell them and to start concentrating on making it a win-win situation for both client and photographer.
