December 2013 update: I'm no longer working as a photographer

In 2009, I launched a company that makes business software for photographers, and now that company is so successful that I've regretfully had to put my photography business on hold indefinitely. You can find out more about this change on my blog.

If you're looking for a photographer, I'm still in touch with many amazing photographers and would be delighted to recommend them to you if you contact me.

Commenting on the royal wedding photographs for BBC News

Posted in Wedding Photography at 19:56 on 30/04/2011

Well, that was a new experience for me. I've just got back from the BBC's Cambridge studio after being interviewed live on air for BBC News, and I'm very glad that I had less than an hour's notice so that I didn't have time to make myself even more nervous than I was.

I was being interviewed about the official photos of the royal wedding - Hugo Burnand's formal photographs of Price William and Kate Middleton. All wedding photographers have to work under pressure, but I can only imagine the adrenaline involved in producing the official photographs for a royal wedding. I'm sure that an extremely well-rehearsed team must have been involved to make everything run like clockwork.

For what it's worth, my opinion of the official photographs of the royal wedding is that they're everything you'd expect - a timeless set of formal photographs entirely in keeping with the style of the wedding. My favourite of the three I've seen is the slightly less formal photograph of the new Duke & Duchess of Cambridge with their flower girls and page boys. We're so used to seeing photographs that have been airbrushed into unbelievability, so I love the way that Hugo Burnand's captured the couple looking great but the kids doing what kids do best when asked to pose for a formal photograph - doing everything apart from looking at the camera! It's an unguarded moment that I'm sure historians will treasure for generations.

Although I've read that her pictures will be kept private, I'd be fascinated to see the photographs that Mille Pilkington was commissioned to take by the couple. Having to keep out of the way of the international media as well as being respectfully unobtrusive for the guests must make for a tough gig, but her pictures are probably going to be closer to the type of photos that I would take at wedding and that most couples would love to have of their wedding day. Wedding photos often become family heirlooms, and I love the idea that this private set of pictures exists just for them, while we've got all of the media coverage we could ask for.

I don't think that BBC News is available on iPlayer unless you're watching it live, but if I'm wrong about that I'll post a link to the segment on my blog.

Portrait photos in Cambridge - Katie & Alastair's photos

Posted in Portrait Photography at 09:00 on 27/04/2011

Katie & Alastair are holding their wedding reception at one of my favourite venues near Cambridge - Anstey Hall - later on this year, and we took advantage of some of the great Spring weather we've been having to shoot their engagement portrait session in some of the great green spaces we've got here. I live close to the river here in Cambridge, so it was great to be able to bring that into Katie & Alastair's portrait session. Here are a few of my favourite photographs from the afternoon.

Christ's College, Cambridge wedding photos - Rhian & Mike's wedding

Posted in Wedding Photography at 09:00 on 21/04/2011

I photograph a lot of weddings in Cambridge colleges, and Christ's College is one of my favourite locations - there's so much lovely old Cambridge sandstone architecture there, as well as beautiful gardens. When Rhian & Mike asked me to photograph their wedding there, I was delighted - and we were lucky to have one of the first really nice days of Spring for their wedding.

Here's a selection of some of my favourite photos of Rhian & Mike's wedding at Christ's College in Cambridge.

I'm photographing Eleanor & Jonathan's wedding down in Devon later on this year, but they took the time to come up to Cambridge for their engagement portrait session on a wonderful Spring day. Here are a few of my favourite photos from their portrait session here in Cambridge.

Outdoor portraits in Cambridge - Emma & Paul

Posted in Portrait Photography at 09:00 on 19/04/2011

Emma & Paul came to Cambridge for their portrait session on a glorious Spring day, so we decided to make the most of some of the wonderful green space around my house here in Cambridge for their outdoor portrait session. Here are a few of my favourite portraits from the shoot.
